Quick question and I’ll leave you all alone. I’m realizing that this purple-ish tint on the windshields of models like the Evoque is also on the Jaguar XE. Since it must be factory, what is the deal with it and why haven’t I seen it on other brands?

Could it be like the coppertone tinted windshields in late 80s Ford products? I think those were super-thin heater elements.

Anti-glare coating I suspect, or just a byproduct of the laminated glass (for sound) on pictures from certain angles.

No clue, the glare at oncoming drivers very noticeably though from every angle it seems. Must be like HID beams, where the only person seeing the benefit is the one that isn’t looking at them.

GM vehicles used to have these (Sungate) as an option - apparently had something to do with repelling heat, I think. This pic doesn’t show it very well.

Because if you're secure enough in your sexuality to ride around with the top down, in a weird SUV/convertible, in the snow, with another dude, then you can do whatever the hell you want with your windscreen.

I know Renault used similar windscreens from around 2004 until 2010-ish, they packaged them with automatic climate control as heath resistant windscreens. I think they block out most of the infra red part of sunlight, which is the part of sunlight that generates heat.

I’m pretty certain that’s an anti-reflective coating that’s causing the light to be reflected onto the camera at a different angle. The camera picks up on it since its sensor can perceive colors better than our eyes in some cases. If you also notice, all those images have similar angles from the car to the camera as well.
The reason it’s violet has to do with the wavelength being reflected back. Normally you wouldn’t see it unless you had vision that’s biased towards shorter wavelengths (Ultraviolet) and your eyes are more sensitive to that wavelength. That allows you so see violet wavelengths that someone else may not be able to see. The same is true for the other end of the spectrum with longer red wavelengths (infrared) Some can see those while others can’t.

It’s mostly due to the coating that repels additional UV rays to keep the cabin a more even temperature. There are also heating elements in the front windshield that makes the glass appear darker from a distance.

More importantly, WTF is this all about:
Sven! We are approacing the maximum departure angle off this pile of round-cut hemlocks at 44 centimeters! Deploy the open roof at once!
Like, couldn’t they find a place to do this on dirt? Can you imagine being in a meeting where this idea was approved? It seems so oddly and unnecessarily elaborate! I want some of whatever they were smoking.

Citroen also have them in their family cars:
And as with your images it can only be seen in some picture angles. I think its some sort of UV coating so the interior doesn’t get as hot.

I know at the glasses shop it’s IR coating, maybe they are doing it that way.

Infrared to keep heat out. Lots of vehicles have it to varying degrees. Very easy to see with polarized sunglasses.

Watch this video, you can see a weird effect from the tinting through the camera on the sky

This was a common thing on Renaults for a while. Actually I think it was on all Renaults, but GIS isn’t backing me up. Maybe only some markets?

I typed a witty and informative comment about how a lot of Renaults have this. But it got Kinja’d and it’s been a hell of a day. So all you get is this image and you’re lucky you get that much
